Chapter
Fifteen
âMindy! Open up! Min-n-n-d-y!â Annie yodeled as I scrambled off the couch.
There was nothing like getting caught with your pants down quite literally to fly into frantic mode. My cheeks heated as I righted my clothing, hoping I didnât have an after-orgasm face and that Iâd left nothing unbuttoned.
The moment I unbarred the front door, Annie rushed in, exclaiming, âYouâll never believe what happened.â
For some reason my gaze slewed to Reiver on the couch, looking quite smug with himself. He deserved it. Usually, a guy had to work harder to get me to come hard like that.
It took effort to drag attention to my best friend. âWhat happened?â
âMy animals. Theyâre gone.â
The words drew my attention, and I focused on Annie. âExcuse me, what did you say?â
âI didnât notice until like an hour ago on account Rusty didnât wake me up at the crack of dawn. I figured he croaked, or the foxes finally got him, only the entire coop was empty. As were my barn and the pastures!â Her hands waved to punctuate her panic.
âWhere did they go? Was there any blood?â An animal attack of that magnitude seemed unlikely, not to mention scavengers tended to leave bodies behind.
âIt is like they just wandered off. Every damned one of them! Betsy and Rory, Yumyum and Jus.â
It always surprised me Annie named her animals knowing sheâd eventually eat some of them. Then again, was I any different, lavishing my plants with attention only to harvest them at need?
The circle of life involved death because, in order for one living thing to survive, it had to consume the life of another. Animal or plant, we were all technically killers.
A morbid thought to have so I shoved it away. Now wasnât the time for maudlin introspection.
âThey must have left some kind of tracks,â Reiver interjected, rising from the couch and drawing Annieâs attention.
Her eyes widened. âHoly shit, youâre the hottie she was talking about.â
He arched a brow at me.
âKeep your cool, Mr. I-Like-To-Keep-Private. I just told her a handsome stranger showed me a spell to repel zombies. She doesnât know you work for the CA as a zombie killer.â
Annie blinked.
He grimaced.
I smirked. âAnnie, meet Reiver. Heâs hunting the necromancer making the zombies. Reiver, my best friend, Annie, to whom I tell almost everything.â
âAlmost?â Annie protested.
âDo you really need to know Reiver and I were making out before you interrupted?â I dropped a nugget to divert her attention.
âWould you like me to leave for five minutes so you can finish?â she offered saucily.
Reiver groaned.
âOoh, Iâll give you ten if he promises to make that noise again.â
Reiver growled. âThis is not amusing.â
âMaybe not to you.â Annie grinned, but her lips fell a second later as she remembered her reason for coming. âDo you think theyâre in danger?â
âHonestly? We might need to watch out for Old MacDonaldâs army,â I opined.
âDammit. And Rory was just about ready for the butcher. He had the most bacony ass of all my hogs.â She pouted.
âThatâs sick,â I complained.
âItâs called coping with reality.
